Getting to Know Yalova: Population, Districts, Livelihoods and Its Former Name

WhatsApp

Get to know Yalova with current insights on its population of 311,635, diverse economy from shipyards to floriculture, major districts like Çınarcık, and historic roots.

There’s a small but meaningful difference between visiting a city and imagining yourself living there. On a visit, you admire the sea view. When you consider staying, you start wondering about the journey to work, the streets in winter and where you’ll buy your groceries.

Questions about Yalova often begin this way. How many people live here? What do they do for a living? Which district is the prettiest, and which neighbourhood would suit you?

Some answers come from statistics. Others depend on the kind of life—or holiday—you have in mind.

What Is the Population of Yalova?

Yalova’s population was 311,635 as of 31 December 2025. This figure covers the entire province, including its districts, towns and villages, rather than the city centre alone.

The year matters. Pages published at different times may show different figures. And the crowds you see along the waterfront on a summer weekend don’t necessarily reflect the permanent population. Visitors, seasonal residents and day-trippers can change how busy a place feels.

If you want to get a sense of everyday Yalova, try walking around on an ordinary weekday as well as during a holiday.

What Are Yalova’s Main Sources of Income?

Yalova’s economy doesn’t depend on a single activity. Manufacturing, maritime industries, tourism, trade, services and agriculture all play a part.

Shipbuilding and ship maintenance and repair are important industrial activities, alongside chemicals and other manufacturing. Thinking of Yalova only as a place of thermal baths and summer homes would leave a substantial part of the picture out.

Ornamental plants and flower growing are another distinctive part of local production. Greenhouses supply cut flowers, potted plants and outdoor varieties.

In Termal, hot-spring tourism supports accommodation, food businesses and related services. To understand how Yalova earns its living, you need to look beyond its visitor attractions—to its nurseries, production facilities and people preparing hotels for the day ahead.

Where Do Most People in Yalova Originally Come From?

First, it helps to decide what “originally from” means. A person’s birthplace, the province recorded in their family’s civil registry and the place they consider home may all be different.

In past breakdowns excluding people registered in Yalova itself, Erzurum ranked first. That historical ranking shouldn’t be presented as a confirmed current result. An up-to-date comparison requires a complete civil-registration table covering all provinces for the same year.

Yalova’s population also reflects migration from different parts of Türkiye and the Balkans. Reducing that history to a single place of origin would miss much of its variety.

Someone whose family registry belongs to another province may have been born in Yalova, grown up here and built their entire life in the city.

Which Is Yalova’s Most Beautiful District?

Someone looking for a long evening walk beside the sea may give a different answer from someone hoping to spend the day beneath the trees.

For nature and thermal baths, consider Termal. Its wooded surroundings, hot springs and historic pavilion lend themselves to a visit built around walking and rest.

For a combination of the coast and woodland outings, consider Çınarcık. A trip that includes Teşvikiye and Erikli can take you from the waterfront into the forest.

For a spring or autumn visit focused on trees and gentle walks, I’d lean towards Termal. For time beside the sea with a separate day set aside for a nature walk, I’d consider Çınarcık.

That’s a choice between different kinds of trips, rather than an objective beauty ranking.

Which Is Yalova’s Largest District?

The answer depends on whether you mean population or land area.

Merkez, the central district, has the largest population. Excluding Merkez, Çiftlikköy is the most populous district.

By land area, Çınarcık is the largest. The district with the most residents and the one covering the most ground are therefore different places.

This distinction is useful when planning a visit. A district centre may look compact, while reaching its villages, woodland areas and coastal settlements takes additional time.

Which Is the Best Neighbourhood in Yalova?

There’s no single neighbourhood that suits everyone. What makes a convenient base for a short holiday may be different from what you need in a year-round home.

You could begin researching central Yalova by comparing Bahçelievler, Rüstempaşa and Süleymanbey on a map. All are neighbourhoods in the city, but individual streets can differ considerably.

For a short stay, look at the distance to the places you’ll visit, transport options and evening activity nearby.

If you’re considering living here, visit the same street in the morning, in the evening and at the weekend. Traffic heard through an open window, the walk to the shops and the time spent finding parking can tell you more than a handful of attractive photographs.

Start with your routine: where will you need to go each day?

What Was Yalova’s Former Name?

Historical sources use the names Yalakova and Yalakabad for the Yalova area. These names appear in accounts by historians of the 15th and 16th centuries.

There’s a detail worth keeping in mind: a historical regional name doesn’t necessarily correspond exactly to the boundaries of today’s city centre. Yalakabad could also refer to an administrative area, so it shouldn’t be treated simply as an old name on the same modern city sign.

Learning an earlier name can change how you look at a place. It reminds you that the streets you walk today belong to a much longer history.

Then your attention returns to the present: people heading to work, a vehicle carrying plants, walkers beside the sea. Getting to know Yalova means noticing those ordinary details alongside its population figures and old names.
