Getting to Know Adana: Its Ancient Name, Upscale Neighbourhoods and Local Roots
Adana is a vibrant Mediterranean metropolis deeply rooted in the ancient Cilicia region, featuring upscale districts across Çukurova and Seyhan, vast central districts, and a native population based on Yörük-Turkmen heritage

Stand on Taşköprü and look across the Seyhan River, and Adana’s past and present share the same view. The historic centre lies on one side, while the city continues to grow around it. Head towards the lake, and the streets, buildings and rhythm of daily life begin to change.
Getting to know Adana means exploring these different sides. What was its ancient name? Which neighbourhoods are considered upscale? Who are its local people? And which district is the largest?
What Was Adana’s Old Name?
Adaniya and Ataniya are among the earliest known forms of Adana’s name. They appear in Hittite cuneiform texts dating to the second millennium BC.
The resemblance to the modern name is striking. Across thousands of years, something of that earlier sound remains recognisable when you say “Adana.”
However, it is uncertain whether the settlement mentioned in those texts occupied precisely the same site as the present city or somewhere nearby. The history of the name is clearer than the exact boundaries of the ancient settlement.
Cilicia should not be treated as Adana’s former city name. It refers to the wider historical region that included Adana. Distinguishing the city from the region helps make its past easier to understand.
What Is Adana’s Most Upscale Neighbourhood?
There is no official ranking identifying one neighbourhood as Adana’s most luxurious. However, Güzelyalı and Beyazevler, both in Çukurova district, are among the areas worth considering when discussing established residential neighbourhoods and upscale housing.
Güzelyalı and some residential areas around the lake attract attention for apartments with views, residential complexes and dining options. Beyazevler also offers varied housing within an established neighbourhood setting.
One distinction matters: Çukurova is a district, while Güzelyalı and Beyazevler are neighbourhoods. Describing all of Çukurova as a single luxury area overlooks the differences within it.
For visitors, spending time around the lake offers a different perspective after exploring the historic centre. A break here introduces you to some of Adana’s newer residential surroundings.
Who Are Adana’s Local People?
Adana’s local population cannot be defined as a single ethnic community. In everyday Turkish, “yerli Adanalı” generally refers to someone whose family has lived in Adana for a long time. It is not an official category identifying one ancestry.
Yörük and Türkmen traditions have an important place in Çukurova’s cultural history. Their influence can be seen in seasonal highland life, oral traditions and customs passed between generations.
Adana is also home to different communities and has grown through migration. A claim that only one group represents the city’s “real locals” would leave much of its history and population out of the picture.
Keep that variety in mind as you explore. A neighbourhood’s story, a family’s journey or a recipe at the table can each reveal another part of Adana.
What Is Adana’s Largest District?
The answer depends on whether you mean population or land area.
Seyhan is Adana’s most populous district, with 782,204 residents in the 2025 population figures. It contains an important part of the city’s historic and commercial centre.
Kozan is the largest district by land area. The most populous district and the one covering the most ground are therefore different places.
Exploring Seyhan brings you into busy urban life. Travelling towards Kozan reveals how much of Adana lies beyond its central districts. Different landscapes and settlements offer distinct experiences within the same province.
Give the historic centre and lakeside areas their own time, then venture towards the outlying districts if your itinerary allows. Learning Adana’s name takes a moment; getting to know the lives gathered beneath it takes a longer journey.
