Elevit Plateau: Follow the Stream into One of Rize’s Most Inviting Highland Villages

WhatsApp

Situated at an altitude of 1,880 meters in the heart of the Kaçkar Mountains, Elevit Plateau offers an authentic Black Sea highland experience with its rushing stream, historic alpine chalets, and scenic hiking trails

Houses nestled between mountains, a stream running through the settlement and greenery stretching up the slopes… Elevit draws you in almost immediately. Your eyes move towards the mountains, then return to the houses. You begin to notice the everyday life within the landscape.

Located at 1,884 metres in Çamlıhemşin, Rize, Elevit Plateau is known for its traditional highland homes, flowing stream and summer gatherings. Come for photographs, but leave time to walk and sit. Much of Elevit’s appeal reveals itself when you give the surroundings your attention.

A Landscape Shaped Around the Stream

The stream running through Elevit is one of its loveliest features. Water passes between the houses and mountainous terrain, bringing movement to a scene of stones, plants and rising slopes.

As you explore, you see the same stream from different perspectives. In one place, the houses catch your eye; elsewhere, your gaze follows the water towards the hillsides.

Find a firm, accessible place to pause and enjoy the water and village together. Rainfall can change the flow, so take care with your footing near the banks.

Look More Closely at Elevit’s Houses

The traditional houses deserve a little of your time. Their position among the mountains, their relationship with the surrounding terrain and their individual details give you plenty to notice.

Elevit is a living settlement. People return to their homes, welcome guests and carry on with daily responsibilities. Newer buildings stand alongside traditional ones.

Ask permission before entering a garden or approaching a private doorway for photographs. An attractive window belongs to someone’s home.

Part of what makes these houses meaningful is that they remain in use.

The People Who Return in Summer

Elevit becomes livelier in summer, particularly when people living away return to their family homes.

For a visitor, these houses and paths are new discoveries. For someone with roots here, they can mean childhood, family and reunion. People looking at the same view bring very different memories to it.

Keep that in mind as you walk. Understanding Elevit as somewhere people long to return to adds depth to even a short visit.

A Plateau Known for Horon

Elevit is also known for horon dancing and highland festivities held in August. These gatherings form an important part of its cultural life.

Horon brings people together in a shared rhythm. Families, returning residents and visitors join the same circle, adding voices and movement to the mountain setting.

If you hope to attend a celebration, check that year’s programme beforehand. Visiting in August does not guarantee an event on your chosen day.

Come for Photographs, Stay to Look Around

The combination of stream, houses and mountains makes Elevit especially appealing to photograph. As you walk, the slopes behind the buildings, the course of the water and the visible sky change.

Mist can conceal distant mountains and bring nearby details into focus. Clear weather reveals more of the terrain surrounding the settlement.

After taking a few photographs, put your phone away. Give yourself time to enjoy being within the scene you have been trying to capture. Listen to the water, look around and leave room for conversation.

Can You Stay Overnight in Elevit?

Accommodation is available on the plateau. Staying overnight can give you more time to explore without fitting everything around the return drive.

An unhurried evening and another walk the following morning are part of the appeal. Confirm that your chosen accommodation is operating on your travel dates and ask about reservation conditions.

Check heating, meals and vehicle access directly with the property. Bring warm clothing and a raincoat, as cool weather and rain are possible even in summer.

Where Is Elevit Plateau, and How Do You Get There?

Elevit Plateau is in Çamlıhemşin district, Rize. Access is via the road towards Çat, followed by the turn towards Elevit.

Vehicle access does not mean that conditions remain suitable for every car throughout the year. Check the final road section, weather and return arrangements before setting out.

If you want to continue towards other plateaus, seek local advice about current mountain roads rather than judging the journey by distances on a map.

You may arrive with a photograph of mountain houses in mind. On the way home, it might be the extra time you wished you had spent beside the stream that stays with you.
