Düzce’s Two Hidden Paradises: Aktaş and Saklıkent Waterfalls You Must See

WhatsApp

Düzce features two stunning hidden getaways: Aktas Waterfall in Akçakoca, dropping from 50 meters amidst lush hazelnut orchards, and Saklikent Waterfall in Yığılca, a serene rest stop along the scenic road to Yedigöller.

One road turns inland from Akçakoca’s coast. Another leads through Yığılca towards Yedigöller. In Düzce, some places worth discovering require a small departure from your original route. Aktaş and Saklıkent waterfalls offer two good reasons to make that turn.

One lies in Akçakoca’s countryside, known for its hazelnut-growing villages; the other belongs to the wooded landscape of Yığılca. Part of their appeal begins before you arrive, with the question that makes a journey interesting: what will be waiting at the end of this road?

1. Aktaş Waterfall: What Akçakoca Hides Beyond the Coast

Akçakoca usually brings the Black Sea to mind first. Yet heading inland towards its villages reveals another side of the district. Here, in a landscape associated with hazelnut orchards, Aktaş Waterfall lies within the boundaries of Aktaş village, offering a reason to add a woodland excursion to your coastal trip.

The waterfall is approximately 11 kilometres from central Akçakoca and 55 kilometres from central Düzce. If you are staying in Akçakoca, you can spend part of your visit beside the sea and another part exploring the countryside.

Water Falling from Around 50 Metres

Aktaş drops from approximately 50 metres, framed by surrounding vegetation. Its setting is as much a part of the scene as its height.

After taking in the whole waterfall, focus on a smaller section. Watch how the water scatters against the rock and narrows into separate threads as it descends. What initially appears to be one continuous flow contains countless smaller movements.

Give yourself a moment before taking photographs. You may want to capture the entire cascade, or simply a ribbon of water glimpsed through the greenery.

For Those Who Want to Hike

One established walking route begins at the Göktepe village junction and continues through Aktaş Valley for approximately 10 kilometres. Mostly following the stream, it is described as moderately difficult.

This does not mean every visitor must walk ten kilometres to reach the waterfall. Distinguish the longer hiking route from other access options, and confirm your starting point beforehand. If you choose the hike, allow time for breaks and your return journey.

2. Saklıkent Waterfall: A Reason to Stop on the Road to Yedigöller

The name Saklıkent may bring other Turkish destinations to mind. This waterfall, however, is in Yağcılar village in Düzce’s Yığılca district.

Approximately 5 kilometres from central Yığılca and 45 kilometres from central Düzce, Saklıkent lies along the route towards Yedigöller. Its location makes it worth remembering when exploring this part of the province.

Make Time to Stay Beside the Water

When travelling towards a familiar destination, it is easy to pass smaller places along the way. Including Saklıkent in your plans beforehand gives you time to experience it without constantly thinking about the next stop.

You do not need a long list of things to do here. Look at the surface over which the water falls, photograph it within its surroundings or simply pause and listen.

Think of Aktaş as a way to explore inland Akçakoca, and Saklıkent as part of a journey through Yığılca towards Yedigöller. Each waterfall becomes a starting point for discovering a different part of Düzce.

Can You Visit Both Waterfalls in One Day?

Aktaş and Saklıkent are in different districts. Allow for the journey between them, your chosen walks and time to rest.

Prioritise Aktaş if you are staying in Akçakoca, or Saklıkent if you are travelling through Yığılca towards Yedigöller. If you want to explore both, spreading the visits across two days can give you more time to enjoy each setting.

Bring drinking water, wear shoes with a good grip and take care with ground conditions after rain. Check current access arrangements and any admission requirements before setting out.

Sometimes a rewarding day in Düzce begins with a change of direction. Add Aktaş to your coastal stay or Saklıkent to your journey through Yığılca. You may return with the sound of falling water among your clearest memories.
