Çal Cave, Trabzon: Following Water beneath the Mountains of Düzköy
Follow illuminated walkways through Çal Cave in Trabzon’s Düzköy district, where limestone formations surround an underground stream, pool and cascade.
October 6, 2026
Trabzon’s mountain scenery usually makes you look upwards. At Çal Cave, the journey takes you beneath it.
Inside, a stream runs through the rock, passages change shape, and the sound of water draws your attention deeper into the cave. The cool, damp air adds to the feeling of entering a different world—one hidden beneath the green landscape of Düzköy.
Known locally as Çal Mağarası, this is an inviting addition to a Trabzon itinerary if you enjoy natural places that you can explore on foot. Leave time to stop along the walkway: the smaller formations and reflections deserve as much attention as the waterfall.
A Cave Shaped by Water
Çal Cave is a limestone cave with an underground stream. Its passages vary in width and ceiling height, opening and narrowing as they follow the rock’s natural structure.
Stalactites hang from above, while stalagmites rise from below. These formations develop as mineral-bearing water deposits tiny amounts of material over long periods. Çal’s formations, together with its stream, pool and cascade, make water the central feature of the visit.
Take a moment to look at one formation closely. A ridge, a pointed tip or a change in colour can be more interesting than the view of an entire chamber. You begin to notice how much variety exists within what first appears to be simply stone.
Two Branches to Explore

The published route description places a junction approximately 200 metres from the entrance. From there, the cave divides into two branches.
The left branch extends approximately 150 metres, ending in a chamber where water enters through a natural shaft. The accessible section of the right branch extends approximately 400 metres and includes a small pool and a cascade. These measurements describe separate sections rather than the total distance you will walk, since visiting both involves retracing parts of the route.
Follow the sections open on the day of your visit. There is no need to rush towards the end: the changing passage shapes are part of the experience.
The Pool and Cascade

The pool and cascade give the right-hand branch a particular appeal. Moving water brings sound and movement into a setting where the surrounding formations appear completely still.
Pause somewhere that leaves room for other visitors to pass. Let your eyes adjust to the lighting before reaching for your camera. Reflections on the water and the shapes around it can be easy to overlook when you are concentrating only on taking a photograph.
Expect the experience to depend partly on conditions. Water levels, visitor numbers and the sections currently accessible can affect how your visit unfolds.
Walking inside the Cave

Çal has installed lighting and a visitor walkway, allowing visitors to explore designated sections without organising a caving expedition. The interior is cool and humid, so a light layer and shoes with good grip are sensible choices.
Keep to the walkway and avoid touching the formations. Take extra care wherever surfaces are damp, and supervise young children closely.
If enclosed spaces make you uncomfortable, begin slowly and decide how far you want to continue. You can appreciate the cave without feeling obliged to explore every accessible section.
Walking Note — Physical Effort: 2/5
An editorial estimate for the standard visitor route. Expect a sustained walk with return sections, rather than a quick look from the entrance. Damp surfaces and changing passage widths may require care. Visitors with limited mobility should confirm walkway access and any steps before travelling.
Planning Your Visit
Çal Cave is in Çal, within Trabzon’s Düzköy district. When arranging transport, use the cave’s full name and confirm the return journey, particularly if you are travelling without your own vehicle.
As a planning suggestion, allow around an hour inside, with extra time if you prefer a leisurely pace or encounter queues. Keep the journey to and from Trabzon separate from that allowance.
The current winter schedule, effective from 5 October 2026, lists opening hours as 09:00–17:00 every day. Check the official seasonal-hours announcement before travelling, and confirm the current admission price.
