Beycesultan Höyük and Beyce Sultan Tomb: Layers of History in Denizli
Explore Beycesultan Höyük near Çivril, where prehistoric settlement layers and the medieval Beyce Sultan Tomb share the same historic landscape.
October 9, 2026
Near Çivril, in Denizli province, Beycesultan brings together two very different chapters of Anatolian history: an ancient settlement mound and a medieval tomb that gave the site its name. It lies approximately five kilometres southwest of Çivril’s centre.
Understanding what lies beneath the ground makes this a more rewarding stop. A höyük is a mound formed as generations build, live and rebuild in the same place. The raised landscape itself becomes a record of their lives.
The Ancient Settlement Beneath Your Feet
Excavations at Beycesultan have identified 40 archaeological layers spanning the Late Chalcolithic through the end of the Late Bronze Age. These discoveries make the site important for understanding the early history of southwestern Anatolia.
Think of successive homes, hearths and streets occupying the same ground. Their remains help archaeologists piece together how communities changed over time. Visitors will appreciate the site most by arriving with that context, rather than expecting every excavated structure to be visible or accessible.
Beyce Sultan Tomb
On the northern part of the mound stands the tomb associated with Beyce Sultan, an Anatolian dervish. The building is attributed to the 14th century through its architectural characteristics, although it has no surviving inscription giving an exact construction date.
Its octagonal body, dome and combination of stone, reused marble and brick give you details to look for during a visit.
The tomb adds a human connection to the ancient landscape. Beneath it are traces of much earlier communities; above them stands a building preserving the memory of a figure respected locally.
Planning Your Visit
Confirm current access before making a special journey, including whether the tomb is open and which parts of the archaeological area visitors may enter. Allow around 45–60 minutes as a suggested planning window, depending on permitted access.
Wear sturdy shoes, carry water and follow any barriers or staff instructions. Keep your voice low around the tomb and ask before photographing anyone visiting for prayer.
Walking Note — Physical Effort: 2/5: An editorial estimate for a short visit; slopes and uneven ground may increase the effort.
