Best Time to Visit Antalya for Beaches, Sightseeing and Hiking
The best time to visit Antalya depends on your plans. Compare every season for swimming, ancient cities, the Lycian Way, crowds and weather—and choose the months that fit your trip.
September 23, 2026
There is no single best month to visit Antalya. The perfect week for a beach traveler can be exhausting for a hiker, while the cool conditions that make ancient cities enjoyable may feel disappointing to someone dreaming of long days in warm water.
For most visitors, the answer is simple:
Best for beaches and swimming: June to September
Best for sightseeing: April, May and October
Best for hiking: March to May and October to November
Best balance of sea and sightseeing: Late May, June, September and early October
Best for fewer crowds: April, May, late October and November
Hottest and busiest period: July and August
Rainiest and least predictable period: December to February
If you want one recommendation that works for the widest range of travelers, choose June or September. Both months usually combine beach weather with more manageable sightseeing conditions than the peak of summer.
But Antalya is a large province, stretching from mountain trails and high plateaus to warm coastal resort towns. Conditions in Kaş, Kemer, central Antalya, Side and Alanya can differ on the same day. Elevation matters, and the weather beside the sea does not tell you what to expect on a mountain route.
This guide explains what each season is genuinely good for—and what travel brochures often leave out.
Antalya’s Climate in Plain English
Antalya has a Mediterranean climate: summers are hot, sunny and dry, while winters are mild but considerably wetter.
Official long-term records from the Turkish State Meteorological Service show average temperatures in central Antalya rising from around 9.8°C in January to approximately 29°C in July and August. These are full-day averages, not afternoon highs. Daytime temperatures during heatwaves can be far higher.
The coast can also feel hotter than the thermometer suggests because of humidity and strong sunlight. A 30°C afternoon in Antalya may feel more tiring than the same number in a dry inland city.
Winter is not permanently cold, but it is not endless beach weather either. Antalya can have bright, mild days in January followed by heavy rain, strong wind and rough seas. Short trips in winter need flexible plans.
The Taurus Mountains add another layer. Higher trails may be cool, windy, snowy or inaccessible while people are sitting outside in sunshine on the coast.

Best Time for Beaches and Swimming
For a reliable beach holiday, choose June, July, August or September.
June: The Best Early-Summer Choice
June is one of Antalya’s strongest all-round months. The days are long, the sea is increasingly comfortable and the intense summer season is underway without always reaching the extremes of late July and August.
It works particularly well for travelers who want to swim every day but still plan to visit Kaleiçi, Perge, Aspendos or another archaeological site.
By late June, however, afternoons can already be very hot. Plan ruins and city walks for the morning, then move to the beach or shade after lunch.
July and August: Best for Pure Beach Weather
July and August offer the most dependable hot-weather resort experience. Rain is uncommon, the sea is warm and beach facilities operate at full capacity.
These months are best if your priority is:
Swimming and sunbathing
All-inclusive resort facilities
Boat trips and water sports
Warm evenings and active nightlife
Traveling during school holidays
They are less suitable for intensive sightseeing. Walking through an exposed ancient city at 1 p.m. can be physically draining, and stone surfaces radiate heat. Long-distance hikes at low elevation can be dangerous in extreme temperatures.
July and August also bring the largest crowds, busy airports and strong demand for popular hotels. If you must travel then, begin outdoor cultural visits as early as possible and leave the middle of the day unscheduled.
September: The Best Late-Summer Month
September is arguably Antalya’s best month for travelers who want warm water without the harshest part of summer.
The sea retains heat, resorts remain fully active and evenings are still warm. Early September can feel very summery, while the second half of the month gradually becomes more comfortable for walking and excursions.
It is still a popular period, so do not expect empty beaches. The advantage is balance rather than isolation.
October: Can You Still Swim?
Yes, many visitors swim in Antalya during October, particularly in the first half of the month. The sea cools more slowly than the air, and sunny days can feel beautifully warm.
But October is less predictable than September. A perfect beach day can be followed by wind or rain. Beach clubs may begin reducing services later in the month, and some seasonal hotels move toward closing.
Choose October if you see swimming as an important bonus alongside sightseeing—not if your entire holiday depends on seven guaranteed beach days.
Best Time for Sightseeing and Ancient Cities
The best months for sightseeing are April, May and October, followed by March and November.
Antalya’s most important sights are not all indoors. Kaleiçi involves walking on stone lanes, while Perge, Termessos, Aspendos, Side, Phaselis and Olympos expose visitors to sun, uneven ground and varying levels of physical effort.
April: Green, Comfortable and Quiet
April is excellent for cultural travel. The landscape is greener than in summer, daylight is increasing and temperatures are generally comfortable for long walks.
You may have some rain, and the sea can feel too cool for many swimmers. Pack a light waterproof layer rather than expecting uninterrupted sunshine.
April is particularly good for:
Walking through Kaleiçi without peak-summer heat
Exploring Perge and Aspendos
Visiting Termessos
Combining Antalya with Side or the western coast
Photography with greener landscapes and clearer air
May: The Best Sightseeing-and-Beach Compromise
May feels increasingly like summer, especially toward the end of the month. Beach days become more realistic, but the heat is usually less punishing than in July and August.
For travelers who want museums, ruins, waterfalls and occasional swimming, May is one of the safest choices. The main disadvantage is that the sea may still feel fresh early in the month, depending on your tolerance.
October: Warm Sea, Softer Sun
October is the strongest autumn month for cultural travel. Archaeological sites become easier to explore, the sea may remain warm enough for swimming and the largest summer crowds begin to thin.
Days are shorter than in June, and rain becomes more possible as the month progresses. Schedule the outdoor sight you care about most near the beginning of the trip rather than leaving it for the final day.
November: Quiet and Underrated
November can be a pleasant month for Antalya city, museums and ancient sites. Accommodation demand is often lower, and midday walking can feel comfortable.
The tradeoff is uncertainty. You may enjoy several clear days or encounter prolonged rain and wind. Some resort districts feel quiet outside the main season, and seasonal services may be limited.
November suits flexible independent travelers better than visitors seeking a fully active beach resort.
Best Time for Hiking in Antalya
For hiking at low and moderate elevations, choose March to May or October to November.
The Antalya region includes sections of the Lycian Way, a long-distance route extending for more than 500 kilometers between the Fethiye area and Antalya. It passes through coastal landscapes, ancient settlements, forests and mountain terrain. It is not one uniform seaside footpath.
Spring Hiking: March to May
Spring brings green landscapes, wildflowers, flowing water and comfortable temperatures on many routes. April is often the strongest month for hikers who want longer days without summer heat.
Early spring can still bring rain, mud, strong wind and cold conditions at elevation. Water crossings and trail surfaces may be affected by recent weather.
By late May, exposed coastal sections can feel hot. Start early and carry more water than you expect to need.
Autumn Hiking: October to November
October is one of the best hiking months on the Antalya coast. The strongest summer heat has usually eased, daylight remains useful and the sea can still be inviting after a walk.
November is cooler and quieter but less predictable. Rain can arrive in powerful Mediterranean systems, and shorter days reduce the margin for navigation mistakes.
Why July and August Are Poor Hiking Months
Peak summer is not the time for ambitious low-elevation hikes. Shade can be limited, natural water sources may be dry and heat exposure becomes a serious risk. Wildfire restrictions or temporary closures may also affect forest areas.
If you want outdoor activity in summer, choose:
Very early short walks
Higher-elevation routes with appropriate local knowledge
Guided canyon activities with reputable operators
Swimming, kayaking or boat trips instead of exposed midday trekking
Never assume mountain conditions are safe simply because the coast is sunny. Check official weather warnings, local access information and fire restrictions immediately before setting out.
Antalya by Season
Spring: March, April and May
Spring is the best season for travelers who want to do more than lie on a beach.
The coast turns green, walking becomes enjoyable and archaeological sites can be explored without the relentless heat of summer. March remains variable; April offers excellent hiking and sightseeing; May introduces increasingly reliable beach conditions.
Choose Spring If You Want
Ancient cities and museums
Hiking and nature
Comfortable city walks
Fewer crowds than summer
Lower risk of extreme heat
A mixed itinerary rather than a pure resort holiday
Spring Drawbacks
The sea may feel cold, especially in March and early April.
Rain can interrupt outdoor plans.
Seasonal beach services may not be fully active early in spring.
Evenings can require a jacket.
Summer: June, July and August
Summer is designed for beach holidays—but it requires different expectations.
June offers the best balance. July and August deliver maximum heat, warm water and full resort energy. Plan fewer daytime activities, drink water regularly and respect the sun.
Choose Summer If You Want
Reliable swimming weather
Full resort services
Boat trips and nightlife
Long daylight hours
A traditional hot-weather family holiday
Summer Drawbacks
High temperatures and humidity
Crowded beaches and attractions
Higher demand for flights and hotels
Uncomfortable midday sightseeing
Poor conditions for long exposed hikes
Autumn: September, October and November
Autumn begins like summer and ends like a mild, changeable coastal winter.
September is excellent for warm water. October offers the strongest balance of beaches, hiking and culture. November is quieter, greener and better suited to flexible sightseeing than guaranteed swimming.
Choose Autumn If You Want
Warm sea without peak-summer intensity
Hiking and archaeological sites
A couples’ trip or independent road journey
Fewer crowds later in the season
A mix of beaches and culture
Autumn Drawbacks
Increasing rain risk from October onward
Shorter daylight
Seasonal services gradually closing
Less reliable boat and beach weather late in the season
Winter: December, January and February
Winter Antalya is not a tropical beach escape. It is a mild Mediterranean city with rainy periods, sunny breaks and cool evenings.
Central Antalya remains active because it is a living city, not only a resort. Kaleiçi, local restaurants, shopping areas and museums continue to function. Some resort districts, however, become much quieter.
Winter can be rewarding for travelers who value atmosphere over guaranteed activities. On a bright day, sitting outside beside the sea can feel wonderful. On a stormy day, outdoor plans may disappear entirely.
Choose Winter If You Want
A quiet city break
Museums, food and local life
Lower visitor numbers
Flexible archaeological sightseeing
A base for remote work or a longer stay
Winter Drawbacks
Heavy rain is possible.
The sea is too cool for most casual swimmers.
Boat trips may be cancelled.
Mountain routes can have winter conditions.
Some seasonal hotels, beach clubs and restaurants close or reduce service.
Month-by-Month Antalya Guide
January
Quiet and often mild by northern European standards, but wet weather and strong coastal storms are possible. Best for museums, local restaurants and flexible city breaks.
February
Similar to January, with gradually lengthening days. Nature begins to feel greener, but hiking plans should remain weather dependent.
March
Spring starts to appear. Good for sightseeing and selected hikes, although conditions can switch between warm sunshine and rain. Too early for a dependable beach holiday.
April
One of the best months for ancient cities, city walks and hiking. Green landscapes and comfortable temperatures outweigh the risk of occasional rain.
May
Excellent for mixed trips. Sightseeing remains comfortable, resorts become livelier and swimming becomes increasingly appealing, especially late in the month.
June
The best early-summer beach month. Hot, bright and reliable, yet usually easier for excursions than the peak of July and August.
July
Very hot, busy and ideal for travelers focused on beaches, pools and air-conditioned resort comfort. Poor for long midday sightseeing or exposed hiking.
August
Similar to July, with very warm sea and active resorts. Expect intense sun, warm nights and heavy demand in popular areas.
September
One of the best overall choices. The sea remains warm, the resort season is active and conditions become more comfortable later in the month.
October
Excellent for sightseeing and hiking, with a realistic chance of swimming. Increasing rain risk means flexible planning is valuable.
November
Quiet and often pleasant for culture and walking, but not reliable for a classic beach holiday. Good for travelers comfortable adjusting plans around the weather.
December
Shorter days, wet periods and a calm atmosphere. Better for an urban escape than a resort or hiking trip.
Best Time for Different Travelers
Families With School-Age Children
June and early September offer strong beach conditions with slightly more manageable heat than peak summer. If July or August is your only option, choose a hotel with shade, pools and easy beach access.
Couples
May, June, September and October work especially well. Restaurants and hotels are active, while the atmosphere is less dominated by peak school-holiday crowds.
History Lovers
April, May, October and November are the most comfortable months for Perge, Aspendos, Side, Termessos and other open-air sites.
Hikers
Choose April or October for the safest general recommendation. Experienced hikers may enjoy March, May or November with appropriate planning and weather awareness.
Resort Travelers
Choose June through September for the full beach-resort experience. Research shoulder-season opening dates if traveling in April, May, late October or November.
Budget-Conscious Travelers
Look at April, May, late October and November, but compare what is actually open. A cheaper resort stay offers little value if the facilities you wanted are seasonal.
Travelers Who Dislike Heat
Choose April, early May, late October or November. Avoid July and August unless your plans revolve around the beach and air-conditioned spaces.
Important Seasonal Planning Tips
Do Not Use Climate Averages as a Forecast
An average cannot tell you whether your exact week will bring a heatwave or a storm. Check the official forecast shortly before departure.
Leave Flexibility in Spring, Autumn and Winter
Do not place your only boat trip, mountain hike or major outdoor site on the final morning. Weather cancellations are easier to manage when you have another available day.
Check Seasonal Hotel Services
Outdoor pools, water parks, kids’ clubs, beach bars and à la carte restaurants may operate on limited schedules outside summer. Ask the hotel directly rather than assuming every photographed facility is open all year.
Respect Summer Heat
Carry water, wear a hat, use high-SPF sunscreen and avoid long exposed walks during the hottest part of the day. Heat is not merely uncomfortable; it changes what a realistic itinerary looks like.
Check Trail and Forest Conditions
Rain, fire risk, maintenance, temporary restrictions and damaged trail markings can affect hiking routes. Current local information matters more than an old blog post or downloaded track.
Remember That Antalya Has Microclimates
Central Antalya, the western coast, Alanya and high mountain areas do not always share the same conditions. Check the forecast for the exact district and elevation you will visit.
So, When Should You Visit Antalya?
Choose June or September if you want a beach holiday with some sightseeing.
Choose April, May or October if ancient cities, city walks and comfortable exploration matter most.
Choose April or October for the strongest combination of hiking weather, daylight and active tourism services.
Choose July or August only if intense heat does not bother you and swimming, resort life and summer energy are your priorities.
Choose winter for a quiet city-based stay, not for a guaranteed Mediterranean beach escape.
For the most balanced first visit, late May, June, September or early October are difficult to beat. These periods let Antalya be more than one thing: a place where you can swim, explore an ancient street, eat outside and still have enough energy to enjoy the evening.
