Avusor Lake: A Hidden Blue Worth the Hike in Rize’s Mountains

WhatsApp

Situated at an altitude of 2,700 meters at the foot of Kemerli Kaçkar Mountain, Avusor Lake is a breathtaking turquoise glacial sirk lake accessible via a scenic trek from the traditional Avusor Plateau

Along the trail, your eyes follow the slopes while your feet negotiate the stony ground. Then water appears between the mountains—a colour entirely different from the rugged terrain around it. Part of the pleasure of reaching Avusor Lake is that first glimpse of blue at the end of the walk.

Located beneath Kemerli Kaçkar Mountain in Çamlıhemşin, Rize, Avusor is a glacial lake reached on foot from Avusor Plateau. It belongs on the itinerary of travellers who want to spend time among Rize’s high mountains.

This is a destination that involves a mountain walk. Once you reach the plateau by road, the journey continues on foot. Preparing for the terrain is as much a part of the visit as admiring the lake.

A Lake Surrounded by Rocky Slopes

Avusor’s appeal comes from the relationship between the water and the mountains enclosing it. Sloping ground, exposed rock and the shoreline form one striking scene.

In clear weather, blue and turquoise tones can become more noticeable. Clouds and wind change the surface: reflections appear during still moments, then break into small ripples as a breeze passes.

Avusor forms part of a high-mountain landscape shaped by glacial processes. Looking at the surrounding rock and the basin holding the lake gives the view greater meaning. The contours of the mountain become part of what you have come to see.

Walking from Avusor Plateau

The starting point for the lake walk is Avusor Plateau, which can be reached by vehicle.

From there, the route to the lake is described as approximately three kilometres one way. Include the return journey in your plans. Walking time depends on your group’s pace, stops and conditions underfoot.

As you leave the settlement behind, your attention shifts towards the mountains and the trail ahead. Anticipating the moment when the lake will appear gives the walk its own sense of excitement.

Distance alone does not establish how easy a route will be. Altitude, gradients and rocky ground make this a different undertaking from covering the same distance on a level path. For a first visit, walking with a local guide who knows the route is a sensible choice.

Why Does the Lake Look Heart-Shaped in Photographs?

Avusor Lake also attracts attention for its heart-like outline in some elevated photographs.

That appearance depends on the viewing angle. Standing beside the water will give you a different perspective from an aerial image. At ground level, the water’s colour, surrounding slopes and scale of the mountains create the impression.

There is no need to climb steep rocks to recreate a particular photograph. From secure ground, you can appreciate the landscape you have walked to reach.

Leave Time to Sit Beside the Lake

After the hike, allow yourself a rest before beginning the return.

Follow the line where water meets the shore. Look at the rocks on the opposite slope and the clouds moving around the mountains. Surfaces that seemed like a single mass from a distance begin to reveal smaller details.

A drink of water and a snack give you time to recover, too. Bring what you need before leaving the plateau rather than relying on services beside the lake.

Do not drink untreated lake water or plan to enter the lake for a cooling swim. Cold water in a high-mountain setting presents risks that are not obvious from the shore.

When Should You Visit?

The deciding factors are snow cover, weather and trail conditions, rather than the month alone.

A summer visit does not guarantee a snow-free route or clear weather throughout the day. Ask locally about current conditions before setting out.

Mist can reduce visibility, while rain and wind can change the walking conditions. Leave enough time to turn back if necessary.

Bring a waterproof outer layer, warm clothing and walking footwear with good grip. Consider your phone’s battery and the daylight available for the return journey.

Where Is Avusor Lake, and How Do You Get There?

Avusor Lake lies in the mountains above Avusor Plateau, within Çamlıhemşin district in Rize. The plateau is reached by road, followed by a walk to the lake.

Selecting the lake in a navigation app does not mean you can drive to its shore. Confirm access to the plateau and identify the walking route separately. Check whether the final road section is suitable for your vehicle before travelling.

On the way back, you may find yourself turning around occasionally. Until the water disappears behind the mountains, it gives you one more reason to stop.
