Arıkan Mansion: A Doorway to Another Era Beneath Adana’s Kozan Castle

WhatsApp

Situated at the foothills of Kozan Castle, the historic Arıkan Mansion (also known as Yaver's Mansion) stands as a magnificent example of late 19th-century Çukurova civil architecture, currently serving as a boutique hotel and restaurant

Along the old streets rising towards Kozan Castle, a mansion appears behind stone walls. Above its solid stone lower floors are timber details, projecting bay windows and balconies. Arıkan Mansion makes you curious about life in old Kozan before you even step through the entrance.

Located at the foot of the castle in Adana’s Kozan district, the building is also known as Yaver’s Mansion. Its story follows a family home through changing ownership, preservation and its eventual return to welcoming guests.

Who Originally Owned Arıkan Mansion?

One of the clearest records of the mansion’s past is a title deed dated 1903, which identifies its owner as Mıcırıkyan Kirkor Efendi. The building’s history reaches back to the late 19th century, although the date on the deed should not be mistaken for its construction year.

After Kirkor Efendi, the property changed hands before becoming part of the Arıkan family’s life. The family began living here towards the end of 1936.

The name Arıkan Mansion recalls that chapter, while Yaver’s Mansion connects it with its earlier owner. Two names preserve different periods in the life of the same house.

Timber Craftsmanship Above Stone Walls

One of the mansion’s most striking features is the relationship between its stone lower floors and timber upper sections. The substantial walls below give way to a more animated arrangement of bay windows and balconies above.

From the street, let your eyes move between the levels. Projecting sections give the façade depth, while wooden supports and the arrangement of the windows introduce details worth examining.

The bay windows connect the rooms with the street outside. We may not know who once stood at each window, but we can still see how the house opened towards its surroundings.

Courtyards and Sofas: The Shared Spaces of the House

High courtyard walls and arched entrances create a clear boundary between the street and domestic life. Beyond the gateway, your relationship with the building changes: you begin to experience the spaces around the façade you first admired from outside.

The mansion’s open sofas are shared areas connecting its rooms. In traditional houses, a sofa was an important part of the domestic layout, linking individual rooms and helping organise daily life.

The building’s south-facing arrangement also reflects the relationship between Çukurova’s houses and the regional climate. Looking at the placement of windows, open areas and sheltered spaces helps make its architecture easier to understand.

A Historic House Welcoming Guests Again

Registered as a protected cultural property in 1993, the mansion was acquired by Kozan Municipality in 2004. Following restoration, it opened as a boutique hotel and restaurant in 2008.

This gives visitors another way to experience the building. You can plan a meal or an overnight stay alongside your interest in its architecture. Check reservations, room options and restaurant arrangements before visiting.

Part of the pleasure of taking a break here is having time to notice your surroundings. A window frame, a wooden balcony support or the stone courtyard wall becomes something you can study at leisure.

How to Include It in a Kozan Visit

Combine Arıkan Mansion with Kozan Castle, the historic bazaars and Hoşkadem Mosque. The castle offers a view from above, while the mansion and commercial streets introduce the older town at street level.

If historic houses interest you, allow time for the surrounding streets. Once you have studied one mansion, you begin noticing details elsewhere: a similar window arrangement, a different carved doorway or another carefully constructed façade.

Where Is Arıkan Mansion?

Arıkan Mansion is at Manastır Sokak No. 5, Taş neighbourhood, Kozan district, Adana. It belongs in a separate trip to Kozan rather than a walking itinerary around the museums in central Adana.

For accommodation and restaurant enquiries, the listed telephone number is +90 322 515 09 99.

When you visit Kozan, give the streets beneath the castle some time, too. The town’s history continues here through its houses. A bay window, an arched entrance or a courtyard at Arıkan Mansion may become the image you remember most clearly.
