14 Must-See Places in Türkiye: Discover Rize’s Waterfalls, Cloud-Kissed Highlands and Glacial Lakes

WhatsApp

Rize offers 14 fascinating travel destinations in the Eastern Black Sea region, complete with rushing streams, emerald-green plateaus touching the sea of clouds, and historic stone arch bridges

You round a bend and find yourself surrounded by forest. Climb a little higher, and the trees give way to open meadows. Then the mist parts, revealing a house on a ridge you had barely noticed a moment earlier. In Rize, the journey can hold your attention just as much as the destination.

There are many ways to enjoy nature in this corner of Türkiye. You can sip tea above the Black Sea without travelling far from the city, follow a woodland path to a waterfall or head into the mountains towards glacial lakes.

These 14 places in Rize offer a wonderful introduction to the region’s natural beauty. Some suit a leisurely stop; others deserve a day of their own.

1. Anzer Plateau — Discover Where the Famous Honey Begins

Anzer Plateau, also known as Ballıköy, lies in İkizdere. Its honey has made its name familiar, but there is much more to discover when you arrive. Flowering meadows and a settlement surrounded by mountains reveal the landscape behind the product.

During the flowering season, look closely as you walk. Slopes that seem like a single green blanket from a distance reveal different colours and shapes underfoot. Leave the flowers growing and give beehives plenty of space.

Allow time to wander, speak with local producers and sit with the view. Anzer becomes far more memorable when you get to know the place behind the name.

2. Arapdüzü Nature Park and Recreation Area — A Waterfall Beyond the Wooden Bridges

Arapdüzü, in Güneysu, combines a woodland walk with the sound of running water. A route crossing stone-paved sections and wooden suspension bridges leads towards the waterfall.

There are reasons to linger along the way: light filtering through leaves, water beneath the bridges and the damp textures of the forest. At the waterfall, the viewing areas provide somewhere to pause.

Picnic spaces and seating also make Arapdüzü a pleasant choice for spending a few hours outdoors.

3. Avusor Lake — Walk Towards the Blue Between the Mountains

Above Avusor Plateau in Çamlıhemşin, this glacial lake is reached on foot. After arriving at the plateau by vehicle, the mountain walk begins.

As you climb, the landscape changes. The settlement falls behind, and open, rocky terrain takes its place. At the lake, still water meets the rugged textures of the surrounding mountains.

Give Avusor the time and preparation a mountain walk deserves. Account for the return journey, weather and your own pace when planning the day.

4. Botanical Ziraat Tea Garden — See Rize Over a Glass of Tea

Ziraat Tea Garden sits on a hill above central Rize, offering an easy way to enjoy greenery and views close to the city.

After exploring the garden’s different plants, find a table overlooking Rize and the Black Sea. The view, which includes Rize Castle, adds another perspective to the streets you have been walking below.

Take your time here. Stir your tea, watch the light over the water and see how easily one glass becomes two.

5. Elevit Plateau — Let the Stream Accompany Your Walk

Elevit, in Çamlıhemşin, is memorable for the stream running through its highland settlement. Water accompanies your walk while houses and mountain slopes complete the scene.

Everyday life becomes more visible in summer, when people return to the plateau. This is a place where families stay, work and spend time together. Explore with respect for the homes and private spaces around you.

Pause beside the stream. After looking towards the mountains, your eyes may return to the water—and you may decide to stay a little longer.

6. Gito Plateau — Wait for the Mist to Part

Gito, also known as Kito Plateau, lies in the mountains of Çamlıhemşin, with views opening above the forests.

When conditions are right, clouds fill the valleys below. That remarkable sight is weather-dependent: on another day, you might see clear mountain ridges or find the plateau itself wrapped in mist.

Allow for the mountain road when planning your visit. Distance alone will not tell you how long the drive takes, so ask about current conditions and whether your vehicle is suitable.

7. Handüzü Plateau — A Highland Escape from Güneysu

Handüzü’s proximity to Güneysu town centre makes it an appealing option for a day trip into the highlands.

You do not need an elaborate itinerary to enjoy its open slopes, surrounding hills and cool air. Leave time to walk after stepping out of the car, then find somewhere to pause.

Bring a warm layer even in summer. The weather lower down does not always prepare you for the breeze above.

8. Hemşin Waterfalls Nature Park — Follow the Water Through the Forest

This nature park in Hemşin district is worth visiting for its woodland setting, waterfall and walking route.

The approach is part of the pleasure. Moving between the trees, you follow the sound of water and begin noticing the different shades of green around you.

Include it when exploring the Hemşin area. Shoes with good grip will help on surfaces that can become slippery after rain.

9. Isırlık Nature Park — A Green Pause Above the City

Close to central Rize, Isırlık brings city and Black Sea views together with places to walk and relax.

Wander around the pond, pause in the seating areas and look across the landscape from the bird observation point. The sea stretches in one direction, green hillsides in another.

It is a convenient choice when you want time outdoors without a long mountain drive. A brief stop between city sights can easily become a longer visit.

10. Ovit Yedigöller — Discover a Different Rize in the High Mountains

Ovit Yedigöller, in the Moryayla area of İkizdere, is a group of glacial lakes surrounded by mountain terrain.

The scenery feels far removed from the tea gardens near the coast. Rocky slopes and open water take centre stage, with the lakes changing colour under different skies and light.

Plan this as a high-mountain outing. Seasonal snow and road conditions affect access. Travelling with a knowledgeable local guide helps you choose a suitable route and prepare properly.

11. Palovit Waterfall — You Hear It Before You See It

Palovit lies within Kaçkar Mountains National Park in Çamlıhemşin, falling approximately 15 metres through dense woodland.

Its height is only part of the experience. Water strikes rock, spray drifts through the air and the roar fills the forest. From the viewing area, you may feel fine droplets against your face.

Palovit can be included on a route through Şenyuva and Zilkale. Use the open walking and viewing areas, and linger after taking your photographs. The moving water keeps revealing new details.

12. Pokut Plateau — Wooden Houses Against Mountain Ridges

Pokut, in Çamlıhemşin, is one of Rize’s best-known highland destinations, recognised for its traditional houses and mountain scenery.

In clear weather, ridges appear in layers beyond the wooden homes. When mist arrives, distant mountains disappear and nearby rooftops and grass become the focus.

Wandering slowly through the settlement is part of the pleasure. Respect private spaces and notice the daily life continuing within this much-photographed landscape.

13. Sal Plateau — Another Reason to Stay Near Pokut

Sal Plateau lies close to Pokut, making its traditional wooden houses and forest views a natural addition to the same outing.

Visiting both shows how the arrangement of homes and the surrounding outlook can change over a short distance. Give yourself time to walk around Sal and appreciate its own character.

If you plan to walk between the two plateaus, consider the weather and path conditions. In mist, knowing the route matters.

14. Tunca Valley Nature Park — Follow Ardeşen Towards the Mountains

Tunca Valley Nature Park, in Ardeşen district, encompasses mountainous terrain, forests and higher meadows.

This is a broad natural area rather than a single viewpoint. The route you choose shapes what you see, with different landscapes appearing as the elevation changes.

Nature walks and plant observation are rewarding ways to explore. For longer routes, seek local guidance and choose a walk suited to your experience and preparation.

How to Organise Your Rize Trip

Around the city centre, consider Ziraat Tea Garden and Isırlık. In Güneysu, Arapdüzü and Handüzü offer different outdoor experiences.

Around Çamlıhemşin, allow separate days for destinations such as Palovit, Elevit, Gito, Pokut, Sal and Avusor. In İkizdere, Anzer and Ovit Yedigöller deserve their own planning. Hemşin Waterfalls Nature Park and Ardeşen’s Tunca Valley add further routes to explore.

Give these places several days rather than trying to fit them all into one. A good Rize trip leaves time for the mist to clear, the rain to ease or a glass of tea to cool. Sometimes the pause you never scheduled becomes the moment you remember best.
