10 Places to Visit in Kocaeli: From Forest Escapes to the Black Sea Coast

WhatsApp

This comprehensive guide highlights Kocaeli's top ten travel destinations from Ormanya Nature Park to Kandıra's scenic coastal rock formations. It profiles key historical landmarks like the Izmit Clock Tower alongside natural trekking highlights like Serindere Canyon and Ballıkayalar

One day, you are walking through a meadow surrounded by woodland. On another, you are beside the rocky Black Sea coast. Back in İzmit, a historic clock tower, waterfront paths and former industrial buildings reveal another side of the province.

Kocaeli’s places to visit offer plenty for travellers drawn to nature, history and the sea. Give its different districts time rather than trying to fit everything into a single day. These ten stops make a rewarding starting point for your itinerary.

1. Ormanya — Kartepe

Walking between the trees at Ormanya, you can make your way towards Ormanköy, outdoor reading areas or the animal sections. Its variety makes it particularly appealing for families.

Located in Uzuntarla, Kartepe, Ormanya is known for its walking trails, children’s animal farm and forest library. The small houses that appear tucked into the earth, frequently seen in photographs, belong to the Ormanköy section.

Allow time beyond those familiar photo spots. Exploring the paths between the different areas is part of enjoying Ormanya.

2. İzmit Clock Tower — İzmit

One of the city’s landmarks makes a fitting place to begin exploring İzmit. İzmit Clock Tower, in Kemalpaşa neighbourhood, catches the eye with its stonework, fountains and slender upper sections.

Built to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Sultan Abdülhamid II’s accession, the tower belongs within a wider historic setting. After taking a photograph, continue into the nearby streets.

Look closely at the details: the fountains around the base, the windows and the changing proportions between floors give the structure its character.

3. Eskihisar Castle and Waterfront — Gebze

Eskihisar, in Gebze, combines historic surroundings with time beside the water.

The castle rises on a hillside overlooking an area it once helped defend, protecting the harbour and maritime passage. After exploring the accessible castle surroundings, head towards the waterfront for a change of pace.

Give yourself time to enjoy the neighbourhood as a whole. Plan your visit around the castle’s current access arrangements and keep to areas open to visitors.

4. Kerpe and Kartal Kayaları — Kandıra

At Kerpe, the sea shares your attention with the shoreline itself. The hollows, projections and layered surfaces of Kartal Kayaları—the Eagle Rocks— invite a closer look.

Shaped by the Black Sea, these formations create one of Kocaeli’s memorable coastal views. Their appearance changes as you move along the shore.

It is a rewarding stop for scenery and photography. Stay away from wet rock surfaces and exposed edges. A meal by the waterfront gives you another reason to spend longer in Kerpe.

5. Sardala Bay and Cennet Havuzu — Kandıra

Within Pınarlı neighbourhood, Sardala brings woodland and rocky coastline together. Along its neighbouring coves, the relationship between stone, water and greenery keeps changing.

A woodland path leads towards Cennet Havuzu, or Paradise Pool. This natural formation fills with seawater through an opening connecting it to the Black Sea.

It appeals to visitors who want to combine coastal scenery with a walk. Prepare for natural terrain on the approach to the pool, and avoid entering the water or exposed rocky areas in rough conditions.

6. Menekşe Plateau — Başiskele

At an elevation of 1,050 metres in the Samanlı Mountains, Menekşe Plateau offers woodland-fringed meadows and a small number of highland houses.

As you emerge from beech, hornbeam and pine trees, the view opens. Named after the violets growing around it, the plateau rewards attention to smaller plants as well as the wider landscape.

Walkers can consider the Aytepe–Menekşe route. There are no tourist facilities on the plateau, so bring drinking water and food. Check current rules before making camping plans.

7. Nüzhetiye Waterfall — Gölcük

Reaching Nüzhetiye Waterfall begins with a walk along the stream. Hornbeam, beech and linden trees frame the route, making the approach part of the experience.

Eventually, water falling over rock comes into view. The greenery and textured stone are as much a part of the scene as the waterfall.

Expect walking through natural terrain rather than parking beside a viewing platform. Stream crossings and slippery stones require suitable footwear and care. Afterwards, consider a meal at one of the trout restaurants around Nüzhetiye.

8. Serindere Canyon — Başiskele–Kartepe

With six waterfalls, natural pools and narrow rocky passages, Serindere presents one of Kocaeli’s striking natural landscapes.

Water threads between the rocks as the scenery changes along the canyon. In some sections, the walls draw close together; elsewhere, a waterfall becomes the centre of attention.

Unlike many other stops on this list, a full canyon passage requires technical experience and equipment. First-time visitors should follow a suitable route selected by a professional guide. Do not plan Serindere as a casual family stroll.

9. Ballıkayalar Nature Park — Gebze

At Ballıkayalar, steep rock faces draw your eyes upwards from the valley floor. This nature park in Gebze is known for rock climbing and walking.

Its rocky passages offer a different atmosphere from an urban outing. Route choice matters: paths around the area and crossings inside the canyon have different demands.

Choose a walk suited to your experience. Climbing requires appropriate training and technical equipment. Check current access rules before visiting.

10. Tahtalı Lake — Derince

For a slower finish to your trip, consider Tahtalı Lake in Derince’s Tahtalı neighbourhood.

Used for agricultural irrigation, the reservoir sits within a green, rural landscape. Reflections become clearer when the water settles, while evening light changes the colours of the shore and sky.

Take a walk, bring your camera or pause at the lakeside Beşdivan Facilities. Enjoy Tahtalı from the shore rather than treating it as a swimming destination.

How Should You Divide Your Kocaeli Trip?

Explore central İzmit, the Kandıra coastline and the Samanlı Mountains on separate days to give each area proper attention. Eskihisar and Ballıkayalar can form part of a day around Gebze.

Kocaeli offers a different direction each time you return. Follow the sound of water on one visit, walk historic streets on another, then spend a later trip watching the day end beside the Black Sea.
