If you’re visiting Istanbul for the first time, you might wonder how much Turkish lira you should carry. The good news is that Istanbul is much more card-friendly than many first-time visitors expect.
Do You Need Cash in Istanbul?
For most of your trip, probably not much. Hotels, restaurants, museums, shopping malls and most tourist-oriented businesses generally accept credit and debit cards.
However, I would still keep a small amount of Turkish lira in your wallet. Cash can be useful at small local shops, market stalls, bakeries, some street vendors and certain public toilets. It also comes in handy for small tips or unexpected situations.
Should You Get Cash at the Airport?
There’s no need to arrive with a large amount of Turkish lira. If you need cash immediately, take out or exchange only a small amount and deal with the rest once you’re in the city.
There are plenty of ATMs around Istanbul, particularly in busy tourist areas. Before withdrawing money, check the exchange rate and any fees shown by both the ATM and your own bank.
What About Public Transportation?
You can use an Istanbulkart for much of Istanbul’s public transportation, including buses, trams, metros and ferries. This can significantly reduce the amount of cash you need during your trip.
How Much Cash Should You Carry?
There is no magic daily amount. If you mainly use cards, a small emergency reserve should be enough. If you enjoy local markets, small bakeries, street food and independent shops, carrying a little more cash makes sense.
A simple strategy is:
Arrive → Get your transportation sorted → Keep some Turkish lira for small purchases → Use your card for everything else.
What Other Travelers Say
Travelers report surprisingly little need for cash in Istanbul. One visitor who stayed for five days said they used cards almost everywhere and relied on an Istanbulkart for transportation.
Another traveler exchanged only $20 worth of Turkish lira during a four-night stay and said almost everything else was paid by card or Istanbulkart. Their main cash expense was a public restroom.
One traveler said they had previously budgeted around ₺500 per day in cash, but often ended the day with most of it unused. Another mentioned having leftover lira at the end of the trip and leaving it as a housekeeping tip at their hotel.
The takeaway: Don’t arrive in Istanbul carrying a wallet full of cash. A card plus a small amount of Turkish lira is usually a much more practical combination.
