You're in Istanbul. You're walking along Ordu Caddesi in Fatih. There are shops everywhere, people moving in every direction, and the constant flow of a busy Istanbul street. On July 21, 2026, two female tourists were walking through this area while shopping. Everything appeared completely normal. But while they were walking, their bags were targeted. According to the subsequent police investigation: The tourists' wallets were stolen from their bags. After realizing what had happened, the tourists reported the theft to police. And this case had something particularly useful for investigators: CCTV footage. Police started reviewing security cameras Following the tourists' complaint, officers from Istanbul's theft investigation unit began examining security cameras around the area. The footage reportedly showed the suspects approaching the tourists and captured moments connected to the theft. Police used the footage to identify the suspects. The result: Two suspects were caught. Their apprehension was also reportedly captured by security cameras. That means this case isn't based simply on: “Two tourists said their wallets disappeared.” There was a formal complaint, a police investigation and CCTV evidence used to identify the suspects. How much money was stolen? This is where Radar follows a simple rule: If we don't know the amount, we don't invent one. Public reporting confirms that the tourists' wallets were stolen. However, it does not specify: How much cash was inside, which currencies they were carrying, or the total financial value of the loss. Therefore, the correct Radar entry is: Amount stolen: Not specified We don't take “wallet stolen” and magically turn it into “€500 stolen” just because that would make the story more dramatic. The important detail: this happened while they were walking This incident did not happen on a metro, tram or bus. The tourists were: Walking along a shopping street. That's an important distinction. Travelers often associate pickpocketing mainly with crowded public transport. But busy shopping streets can also create opportunities for theft. A bag may be easier to access if it is: carried behind you, left partially open, or holding a wallet in an easily accessible outer compartment. Sometimes only a few seconds are needed. While shopping in Istanbul, the question you should ideally be asking yourself is: “Can I actually fit this in my suitcase?” Not: “Is my wallet still in my bag?” But in a crowded area, checking the second one occasionally isn't a bad idea either. Why is this useful for Radar? The real value of reports like this isn't simply recording: “A theft happened.” It's recording: Where, when and how it happened. For future traveler reports, Radar should collect details such as: Exact street or square Approximate time Were you walking or using public transport? Was the wallet inside a bag or pocket? Did anyone bump into or distract you? What was stolen? What was the approximate value of the loss? Was a police report filed? Imagine independent travelers begin reporting similar incidents on the same section of Ordu Caddesi during similar hours. Individually, they're separate theft reports. Together, they create much more useful Radar data: Location + time + method That's where Radar can become genuinely useful for future travelers. This historical Radar record is based on a real incident that occurred in Fatih on July 21, 2026 and was investigated by Istanbul police after the tourists filed a complaint. CCTV footage was reviewed during the investigation, and two suspects were subsequently caught. The suspects' identities are intentionally not displayed in TurkTravelRadar's public record. Have you experienced something similar? Share what happened on Radar. The exact street, approximate time and details of how the theft occurred can be particularly useful for travelers visiting the same area after you. Whenever possible, include a police report, lost/stolen property report, exact incident location, location history, or relevant photos and footage. If bank cards were stolen, you can also provide evidence of any unauthorized transactions, but remember to hide account numbers, card details and other sensitive personal information before uploading screenshots. One theft is one incident. When independent travelers begin reporting similar methods at the same location, Radar can start identifying a possible pattern.
