You sit down at a restaurant in Istanbul. You enjoy your meal and ask for the bill. Food? Correct. Drinks? Correct. Then you notice a small line near the bottom: “Service Charge.” As an international visitor, you might simply assume: “I guess that's how restaurants work here.” But an official inspection carried out in Beyoğlu, Istanbul, in June 2026 shows exactly why travelers should check these additional charges carefully. According to the results announced by Türkiye's Ministry of Trade, inspectors found that one restaurant had collected additional service fees on 69 separate bills issued on June 6, 2026. 69 separate bills. Authorities imposed an administrative fine of: 274,137 TL for the service-fee violations. But the inspection didn't end there. Inspectors checked the menu too Officials also examined the menu displayed at the restaurant's entrance. They found another problem: Prices for 72 different items were missing from the entrance menu. A further administrative fine of: 286,056 TL was imposed for the price-display violations. Together, those two penalties amounted to: 560,193 TL Inspectors also identified six products suspected of unjustified price increases, which were referred for further evaluation. For an international traveler, the important issue here isn't simply whether a restaurant charges a few hundred lira more. The bigger issue is price transparency. When a visitor sees “service charge” at the bottom of a bill, they may assume it is mandatory, officially required or simply standard practice in Türkiye. Most people on holiday want to spend their time deciding: “Should I order dessert?” Not: “Do I need to research Turkish consumer regulations before paying?” Why does this matter for Radar? This report is different from many traveler reports in our historical database. Here, we're not saying: “One tourist claimed this happened.” We're recording findings from an official inspection. Authorities reported detecting service-fee charges across 69 separate bills. That gives this historical Radar record a stronger verification level than a report based solely on an individual traveler's account. It also highlights an important distinction. A restaurant can be expensive. A dish could cost 2,000 TL or even 5,000 TL. A high price alone doesn't automatically mean something improper happened, provided the customer can clearly see the price before ordering. The problem begins when customers cannot clearly understand what they are expected to pay, or when additional charges that should not be imposed appear on the final bill. Before paying at a restaurant, travelers can quickly check: Are the prices of the items you ordered clearly shown on the menu? Does the bill contain an additional “service charge,” “service fee,” or similar item? Do the prices on your bill match the prices you saw when ordering? A ten-second check can sometimes prevent a much longer argument afterward. This historical Radar record is based on publicly reported results of an official inspection conducted in Beyoğlu, Istanbul, in June 2026. It is not presented as the personal complaint of a specific tourist. The business name is intentionally not displayed in TurkTravelRadar's public report. Have you experienced something similar? Share what happened on Radar. Your experience could help another traveler visiting the same area after you know what to check before paying. Whenever possible, upload a photo of the menu, the complete bill, receipt or invoice, and payment record. If your bill contains an additional “service charge” or “service fee,” having photos of both the menu and the final bill can be particularly useful when reviewing the report. Please hide sensitive personal information and card details before uploading any evidence. One customer's bill is one incident. When the same behavior appears independently across multiple reports, Radar can begin identifying a possible pattern.
