What happened? Imagine trying to get a taxi from Hagia Sophia to Taksim after a long day in Istanbul. The journey is only about 5 kilometers. Under normal conditions, it's not a long ride. That's how this traveler's experience began on a recent night. After leaving the Hagia Sophia area, the traveler tried to hail a yellow cab toward Taksim. According to the traveler's account, three different drivers refused to turn on the taximeter. Instead, they reportedly demanded a fixed price of: €35 to €40 The traveler did not agree. For someone visiting Istanbul, knowing exactly what a short taxi journey should cost isn't always easy. Navigation can tell you where you're going. It doesn't always tell you whether the price you're being quoted makes sense. The traveler walked a bit away from the crowd and opened Uber. A cab was ordered through the app. This time, the meter was on. The journey cost around: €7 So the numbers looked like this: Fixed price demanded by drivers: €35–€40 Amount actually paid via app: approximately €7 Difference: approximately €28–€33 That gives us two very different figures: Fixed price demanded: €35–€40 Normal app-based fare: €7 In other words, the amount demanded was up to more than 5 times the fare paid through the app. A short taxi ride had suddenly turned into a test of whether the traveler would accept a scam. The traveler refused and chose a safer option. This case did not go through an official investigation. There's an important difference between this incident and cases that reach prosecutors. This wasn't a formal complaint or a legal proceeding. It was a traveler's warning shared online. But the warning is clear: Do NOT get in if they don't turn on the meter. Just use BiTaksi or Uber to be safe. This still does not mean that taxi drivers in Istanbul generally behave this way. For Radar, the important question is different: Are independent travelers reporting similar incidents involving taximeters not being used, fixed prices quoted in euros, or refusals to use the meter near major tourist sites? One case is an incident. If independent reports begin describing the same behavior repeatedly, Radar can start identifying a possible pattern. This is an example traveler report based on a real incident reported in Istanbul. TurkTravelRadar was not a party to the incident. Have you experienced something similar? Share what happened on Radar. Your report could help the next traveler visiting the same area recognize a similar situation before it becomes a problem. Whenever possible, include supporting evidence such as a taxi receipt, taximeter photo, card terminal receipt, bank transaction, ride-app screenshot, location history, photo or video. Please hide sensitive information such as your full card number before uploading any evidence. One report shows one incident. When independent travelers begin reporting the same behavior, Radar can start detecting a pattern.
