# Turkey in Late April & Early May: What to Expect From the Weather **Travel dates:** Late April – Early May **Route:** Istanbul → Cappadocia → Ephesus & Pamukkale → Antalya If you’re worried about bare trees or dull landscapes, don’t be. Late April and early May are a beautiful time to see Turkey in spring. Coming from a colder climate, I was surprised by how green and lively everything felt. **Istanbul** was especially colorful, with tulips still blooming and the famous pink-purple Judas trees adding color along the Bosphorus. In **Cappadocia**, the valleys were surprisingly green, with wildflowers scattered between the famous rock formations. The weather varied dramatically throughout the trip. **Ephesus, Pamukkale and Antalya** were warm enough for shorts and summer clothes during the day, with temperatures around 24–28°C on the warmer days. Istanbul was milder, around 20°C, although the wind could make it feel cooler. **Cappadocia was the big surprise.** Afternoons could be warm enough for a T-shirt, but early mornings and nights could drop to around 5–8°C. For an early hot-air balloon flight, I wore leggings, a warm sweater, a puffer jacket and a scarf. Pack layers—you’ll be glad you did. ### Can You Swim in Turkey in Late April? Yes, but expect cool water. In Antalya, the Mediterranean was around 20°C during my trip. Travelers accustomed to the North Atlantic or Northern European seas may find it perfectly refreshing, while others may consider it cold. Sunbathing was still fantastic, and hotel pools were a much warmer alternative. ### Things I Wish I Knew Before Visiting * **Wear proper walking shoes:** Ephesus and Pamukkale involve lots of walking, and some ancient stone and marble surfaces can be slippery. * **Bring a light scarf:** If you’re visiting mosques in Istanbul, women may need to cover their hair. Having your own lightweight scarf is convenient and comfortable. Overall, late April and early May gave me a great mix of spring scenery, warm afternoons and cool mornings. **Just pack layers and don’t assume the whole country has the same weather.**
