If you sit down at a restaurant in Türkiye, you may notice that bread and water arrive at your table before you have even looked at the menu or placed an order. If it's your first time in the country, you might wonder, “I haven't ordered anything yet, so why did they bring these?” The simple answer is that **bread and water are traditionally considered a natural part of the Turkish dining table.** In many traditional restaurants, bringing bread as soon as a guest sits down is a common habit. Bread is normally eaten alongside the meal, and it is also perfectly normal to use it to soak up sauces or the juices from certain dishes. Water is often brought to the table in a similar way. However, there is one important detail visitors should know: **bottled water is not necessarily free.** The price depends on the restaurant. If a sealed bottle of water is placed on your table and you're not sure whether it is charged, simply ask before opening it. Bread can also vary from one restaurant to another. Some places provide it free of charge, while others may include a bread, cover, or service charge on the bill. So don't be surprised if bread and water appear before you order. It is generally just part of the dining culture in Türkiye. **But if you're unsure about the price of bottled water, asking beforehand can save you from an unexpected charge when the bill arrives.**

I've eaten at quite a few different restaurants in Türkiye, and I've never been charged extra for bread. In the places I've visited, the bread and even the meze served at the table were usually simply part of the meal and weren't charged separately. So I don't think tourists should assume that they will automatically have to pay extra for bread or meze at every restaurant. Still, if you're unsure, it's always best to ask before ordering.
