# What Should You Wear When Visiting a Mosque in Türkiye? Mosques are places of worship, so visitors are expected to dress **modestly and respectfully**. Clothing should not be too tight or revealing. It is also important to wear clean and tidy clothes. ## Dress Code for Men The dress code for men is fairly simple, but there are still a few important rules: * **Trousers or shorts:** Your legs should be covered below the knees. Long trousers are the safest and most respectful choice. Very short shorts are not appropriate. * **Shirts:** Your shoulders should be covered. T-shirts and short-sleeved shirts are acceptable, but sleeveless tops should be avoided. * **Socks:** Mosque floors are covered with carpets, and shoes must be removed before entering. Wearing socks is recommended for both hygiene and comfort. ## Dress Code for Women Women are generally expected to follow these guidelines: * **Head covering:** Hair, ears and the neck should be covered with a headscarf or shawl. If you do not have one, many large mosques provide scarves at the entrance free of charge. * **Upper body:** Shoulders, chest and arms should be covered. Long sleeves are the safest choice. * **Lower body:** Legs should be covered down to the ankles. Loose trousers, long skirts and long dresses are suitable. * **Fit of clothing:** Clothes should be loose enough not to clearly reveal the shape of the body. Miniskirts, tight leggings, low-cut tops and sleeveless shirts are generally not appropriate inside a mosque. ## Do You Have to Remove Your Shoes? Yes. You must remove your shoes before entering the carpeted prayer area. Mosque floors are kept clean because worshippers kneel and place their foreheads on the carpet during prayer. Shoes are usually left on shelves near the entrance or carried in a bag provided by the mosque. Make sure you remove your shoes **before stepping onto the carpet**. ## What If Your Clothes Are Not Suitable? Do not worry, especially when visiting major tourist mosques such as the Blue Mosque in Istanbul. Many popular mosques provide visitors with free headscarves and modest covering gowns or robes at the entrance. You can borrow them during your visit and return them when you leave. ## A Few Extra Tips * Avoid visiting during the main prayer times, particularly Friday noon prayers, unless the mosque has specific arrangements for tourists. * Keep your voice low and put your phone on silent. * Do not walk directly in front of someone who is praying. * Ask permission before photographing worshippers. * Follow the signs and instructions given by mosque staff. Visitors of every faith are welcome in many mosques. Dressing modestly, removing your shoes and behaving quietly are usually all that is required for a respectful visit.

I was a little worried about what to wear when visiting a mosque in Istanbul because I thought the rules would be very strict for tourists. As a man, I had no problem visiting in long trousers and a short-sleeved T-shirt. Taking off my shoes before stepping onto the carpet was a different but interesting experience for me
