Hey everyone, John here again. Today I decided to escape the massive crowds in Sultanahmet and went on a walk behind the Grand Bazaar towards the Süleymaniye Mosque. If you want to feel the "real" historical Istanbul without the commercial tourist traps, this is the area to go.I randomly wandered into some old, crumbling trading courts (locals call them 'Han'). They look centuries old, and you can see local craftsmen working inside. It felt like stepping back in time. But the best part was the area right behind the Süleymaniye Mosque. There are some local rooftop cafes there. I sat at one, ordered a traditional Turkish coffee, and the view of the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus was absolutely incredible—and it cost me less than 3 Euros!I highly recommend spending an afternoon just getting lost in these backstreets. Quick question though: I saw a massive building called "Büyük Valide Han" on the map but the rooftop access seemed closed. Does anyone know if it's still possible to get up there for photos, or is it permanently shut? Cheers!

"Spot on, John! My girlfriend and I explored those exact backstreets behind the Grand Bazaar two days ago, and it really feels like a completely different world compared to Sultanahmet. To answer your question, the famous rooftop at Büyük Valide Han is unfortunately permanently closed to tourists now. Apparently, the government locked it because the influx of Instagram travelers jumping on the ancient domes was causing serious structural damage, which makes total sense. However, you can still walk inside the main courtyard of the Han during the day to see the old textile workshops. If you still want an epic rooftop view without breaking the law, you should check out Tahtakale Tarihi Şark Kahvesi or any of the cafe terraces right next to the Süleymaniye Mosque. They offer the exact same stunning view over the Golden Horn and the coffee is super cheap. Keep up the awesome trip reports, mate!"
"This is exactly the kind of vibe I've been looking for, John! I'm getting so tired of the aggressive sellers around Sultanahmet, so escaping to these old hans sounds perfect. I am definitely saving this whole route for Thursday afternoon. That 3 Euro rooftop coffee view next to the mosque sounds unreal, mate. I hope someone answers your question about Büyük Valide Han soon because I really want to check that place out too!"
