Tourists can buy many common medicines from pharmacies in Turkey without a prescription, including some painkillers, cold remedies, allergy medicines, stomach treatments and basic creams. Pharmacists are usually helpful, and many in tourist areas speak at least some English. However, antibiotics are prescription-only in Turkey and should not legally be sold over the counter. The same applies to other prescription medicines, especially sleeping pills, strong painkillers and controlled psychiatric medications. Turkish law prohibits pharmacies from supplying prescription-only medicines without a valid prescription If you need antibiotics, you should visit a public or private clinic and get examined by a doctor. Private clinics are often the simplest option for tourists. Bring the medicine’s original packaging, a photo of the label or a copy of your existing prescription if you need a regular medication. Brand names may differ in Turkey, but the pharmacist can usually identify the active ingredient. Do not buy antibiotics from unofficial sellers or take them without medical advice. They will not treat viral illnesses such as most colds and flu, and unnecessary use can cause side effects and antibiotic resistance.
