Hi everyone! I'm James from London. I’ve wanted to see Istanbul my entire life, and last month I finally made it happen with a 5-day solo trip. I stayed in the Sultanahmet area. The city completely mesmerized me, but it also drained my energy a bit. Here are my honest observations:The Good:The Sheer Scale of History: Standing right between the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque was insane. You are literally in the middle of thousands of years of history. We just don't have this kind of atmosphere in the UK. Especially during the morning call to prayer, the mystical vibe in the square gave me absolute goosebumps.Genuine Turkish Hospitality: As I was walking past a small carpet shop, the owner invited me in. Even though I didn’t buy a single thing, he offered me free apple tea, and we chatted for half an hour about Istanbul’s history. The local people are truly warm-hearted.The Street Cats: As a cat lover, Sultanahmet Square was absolute heaven for me. Seeing how plump, well-cared-for, and loved these cats are by the locals really touched my heart. There were food and water bowls at literally every corner. The Bad:The 'Mosque is Closed' Scam: While walking towards Hagia Sophia, a well-dressed guy who spoke perfect English approached me. He said, "Hey mate, the mosque is currently closed for prayers, but if you want, I can take you to a hidden historical spot nearby that's open." Luckily, I had read about this on Reddit; these guys just want to lure you into their carpet or souvenir shops to pressure you into buying something. I politely said "No thanks" and walked away. The mosque wasn't closed at all, so watch out!Ticket Prices for Foreigners: Entrance fees for museums are incredibly expensive for non-residents (charged in Euros). If you plan on visiting more than three museums, definitely get the 'Museum Pass Türkiye'. Otherwise, buying individual tickets will absolutely destroy your wallet.Overly Aggressive Restaurant Touts: Walking down Divanyolu Avenue is exhausting because staff from every single restaurant jump out in front of you with a menu. They shout things like, "Hello my friend, where are you from?". After a while, it gets a bit claustrophobic. Your best bet is to put your headphones on and just ignore them.Overall Verdict: Istanbul is one of the most chaotic yet beautiful cities I have ever seen in my life. Just keep your eyes wide open for the tourist traps in Sultanahmet, and you'll have an unforgettable time!
