Avoid restaurants with no printed menus near Sultanahmet! Total bill scam

Hey guys, I need to vent and warn everyone visiting the Sultanahmet area right now. My friend and I went to a place near the tram line that had a big sign outside advertising "Homemade Local Food".The guy outside was super friendly and told us to just come inside and pick whatever we wanted directly from the open food display. Stupidly, we didn't ask for a physical menu with prices because he made it sound like a cheap, casual cafeteria. We just had a very basic lunch—some stew, rice, and two teas. When it was time to pay, the waiter refused to give us an official machine receipt. He just wrote a random number on a small scrap piece of paper: 2,780 TL (around $55 USD) for a simple lunch!! When I argued and pulled out my credit card, they said "Sorry, our card machine is broken right now, cash only".They completely exploit the fact that you don't know the local prices and don't have a menu to prove them wrong. Is there any way to report these kinds of places to the Tourist Police? I feel absolutely robbed and it ruined my day.

Man, the exact same thing happened to me and my girlfriend last week near the Spice Bazaar! These places are absolute parasites. We went to a small kebab shop, ordered two wraps and two sodas. When the bill came, they charged us 3,200 TL! They added a 15% 'service charge' plus a massive 'table fee' that wasn't mentioned anywhere. When I complained, three big waiters stood around our table making us feel super uncomfortable, so we just paid and left. It’s a total scam tactic to pressure you.Like the other user said, you should definitely find the Tourist Police in Sultanahmet Square, they have a small station there. Don't let this ruin your trip though, Istanbul is amazing but you just have to be extremely ruthless with restaurants in tourist zones. If they don't show you a menu with clear prices, just walk away!"
"This makes me so mad, sorry you had to deal with this rubbish on your first day. 2,780 TL for a basic lunch is straight up robbery, even for Sultanahmet prices. The 'broken card machine' is their oldest trick to avoid tax and keep your money. Go straight to the Tourist Police booth near Hagia Sophia and lodge a formal complaint. Don't let these lowlifes ruin your holiday, mate!"
